The Art Of Decision Making

March 20, 2012

In today’s world, anything is possible.  Yep.  Anything.  You can be anything you want, and you can do anything you can imagine.

Let that reverberate for a moment.  Anything. Like space, it can go on forever into the distance.  I know I can feel lost in it at times.

Since there are about a jillion options out there – for career, relationship, life path, what to do on your Saturday night, how do you decide what’s right for you?

Here’s a 5 step starter process designed to get you into ACTION around your big decision.

What do you really want?
Deep down, big picture, what do you want? Be real with yourself.  This is huge.

What are you willing to do to get it?
Are you willing to make a phone call? What about fly across the country? Are you willing to simply ask for it? Are you willing to ask for help? Make a list of all the things you are willing to do for your dream.

What will you 100% not do?
Some things are too much – what are you unwilling to do? Write down that list too.  It’s helpful to see what you will and won’t do in pursuit of your dream.

What is at stake?
What will happen if you don’t go after this? What do you have to loose? Get really clear on what the stakes are – both for going after it, and not.

Where does this fit in with your big WHAT from the first question?
How does this further you towards your big picture want for your life? Or does it move you farther away.  How does this particular thing fit into the bigger picture of your life?

And, for a bonus step:
GO EFFING GET IT.
It’s probably already yours, you just have to claim it.  So go get it.  Whatever it is.  Do what it takes, go the distance, don’t let yourself down. You got this, I know it.

Adore this process but need a bit more structure and guidance?

  1. What a delightful article, Ellen! I always bristle when coaches talk about how if you want something you’re willing to do whatever it takes… Because there are some things that I want, but they’re not worth ruining my life over. So it’s nice to read an article that acknowledges that it’s okay not to be willing to do certain things.

    • Thanks Jessica! It’s true! There is a limit to what we’re willing to do, and once we understand that, a lot more possibility can present itself. I too think it’s a super important part of making decisions that’s not being talked about. It’s not always ‘go go go!’ Glad it resonated.

  2. Very cool post. When I was young I used to think that if you wanted something bad enough you could get it or achieve it. Nowadays, I know from experience that not only wanting it will help you acquire things. You need to be willing to put in the hard work that it takes. I have been exercising since I was 14 and thanks to the exercise and weight lifting I have learned that it takes much much more than just wanting things. Congrats on this post. It will help a lot of people.

    • Thanks so much! It’s true that just WANTING something won’t get you anywhere. It’s how you use that want to really work for your dreams. Weight lifting is a perfect example of that! No amount of want is going to get you those 6 pack abs, you gotta DO something about it 🙂 Thanks for your feedback!
