What To Do When You Have Too Many Ideas

July 12, 2013

I have spent the last weekend at the World Domination Summit, and to say the ideas are exploding out of my head is an understatement.  They explode, and then those ones explode, spawning new and wonderful change-the-world-type ideas.  I was surrounded by thousands of other World Dominators, equally inspired and on fire to bring their ideas to life.

And that’s the thing.  There were/are/will always be too many ideas.   And when you’re passionate about most of them, how do you decide what to move forward on, and what to let float away, like a good idea dandelion, pollinating other good ideas of the world and the future?

What’s going to make money?  This is huge and the one most people avoid doing the most.   If you’ve got an amazing idea, and it’s possible it’s going to bring you some dolla’s – it’s time to prioritize that and make it happen.  Especially if you say, need the extra infusion of cash so you can life a life that you loooovvveee.  Who doesn’t?

What are you most on fire to do? This is the idea that stands out to you even if you’ve got 50 other things that you ‘should’ be doing, but you just can’t seem to stop thinking about this one.  That idea is the one with tons of fire, passion and inspiration around it, and you should probably go for it!

Can you double dip? Is there a way to combine several of your ideas? Or explore one while you’re creating another? Example, my friend wants to write a book, AND develop her coaching practice.  She feels like she can only do one or the other.  What if she incorporated some of the interviews she wants to do into her coaching work?  She wants to interview essentially her target clients, so this works out well.  Double dipping can be perfect for inspired folks.

Start small. I went to a talk about fear busting by Leo Babauta and JD Roth.  Leo talked about starting with the bottom rung of the ladder when it comes to overcoming fear.  Overcome your fear in one small way, and other, larger ways will become easier.  Same thing with inspired idea implementation.  Do one small idea, and keep moving up the idea ladder.  My small idea was to sync my instagram and twitter accounts.  I want to develop more of a social media presence, and sharing photos of Huxley seems like a great way to do that!  If you’re on those two networks, come say hi!

Start big.  JD talked about this – it’s the jumping in the river mentality.  Go big, jump in, you’ll figure out how to make it happen.  It’s not everyone’s cup of tea, but it sure can work!

Keep doing what you’re doing.  Create.  Take one more step towards your dreams.  It’s critical to not get stuck in idea or inspiration paralysis.  Make time everyday to create, even if it’s only 15 minutes.  Keep doing that and you’ll end up with something amazing.

One of my most favorite quotes from the event was:

Notice the sparks

So while new ideas are amazing, don’t ignore what’s in front of you now.  What sparks could you fan into flames? What ideas are you going to focus on making happen?

  1. Ideas flow in and out of my head all of the time. I’m actually trying to figure out the best way to record and file them. I should probably do a mind dump ever so often.

That being said, I’m in the beginning stages. So, my first major idea right now is an opt-in workbook. I’ll move next to my first offering. I keep telling myself baby steps! Thanks for the inspiration!
